A Symposium on Free Speech and Its Potential Limits
Hey all,
I am pleased to announce our next event, A Symposium on Free Speech and Potential Limits, co-organized with the terrific group, The NYC Political Forum (https://www.meetup.com/NYC-Politics/). You can also follow them here: http://www.nycpoliticalforum.org/. This event will cover four Free Speech topics, which can roughly be broken down as follows:
1) Libel laws: From the Alien and Sedition Acts to New York Times Co. v. Sullivan to present day.
2) Prior restraint versus post-publication punishment.
3) What constitutes as "hate speech"?
4) Restrictions on "inflammatory speech," from the First Red Scare to today.
The format for this event will be different than our previous ones. Thomas Kim, who organizes the NYC Political Forum, and I will take turns introducing the above topics. And after each intro, we'll open it up for questions and a group conversation. Just to give you a sense of what the night will look like, we've tentatively allotted about ten minutes for each of our introductions, and about twenty minutes for each question/discussion period.
A quick point about Free Speech: In my opinion, both the judges who interpret the Constitution and our representatives who make the law are human beings very much responsive to their fears, the dangers our country faces, whether they're real or imagined, and political pressures from the other branches of government, as well the people themselves obviously. Given that we’re living through turbulent times, I think it’s important to examine our current free speech rights, robust as they are, through this lens. This is one of the broader themes I hope we can explore on the 21st.
I am excited for this event! There's a cap on attendance given the space limitations of where we're meeting. So please reserve your spot ASAP! This event will be at Tuttles Bar in Midtown. We've reserved the entire tented area in the back of the first floor.
